Reason for SCIS:

Before my accident, I guided for any and all outdoor adventure pursuits: Mountaineering, Skiing, Rock and Ice Climbing, Rafting, Kayaking...you name it. In January 2010, I fell while Ice Climbing in Colorado. The result was a L1 vertebra burst and an SCI. After two weeks of ICU, I was moved to Craig Hospital where I stayed for 5 months, then to Brook Army Medical Center's CFI (Center for the Intrepid) for 7 months receiving specialized care for Spinal Cord Injuries. During the 13 months of rehab following my accident, I learned to walk again, to engage again, to socialize again. Hope was given back to me through the love and support of friends, family and my wife who stood by me. Now 15 months post injury I have gotten back into most outdoor activities I used to do. I have no leg braces, can walk with and sometimes without a cane and have grown a tremendous heart for SCI patients, Doctors, Therapist and the research that funds their technologies and methods.

I got into wheelchair racing through Wendy Gumbert, the Military US Paralympic program and Center for The Intrepid at BAMC. I have raced the Army 10 Miler and the San Antonio Rock-n-roll where I placed 1st in the wheelchair division 2010. I have never done a full marathon, but look forward to pushing my way across the finish line. I expect to finish at 3:00ish...

My hope is that the money we raise will help find a procedure to reverse the effects of SCI so that people who have lost function can regain it.
