Rodney Rogers, Paralyzed

Submitted by SCIS on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 20:24
If the morbid state of the economy or the freezing temps and snow in Chicago aren't enough to put me in a bad mood, I learned today that Rodney Rogers, a former Wake Forest star and NBA journeyman sustained a spinal cord injury while riding an ATV. The news reports are vague at the moment as to how long ago the injury occured, but it sounds like he is "paralyzed from the shoulders down". That's layman speak for a cervical injury; Rodney Rogers is most likely a quadriplegic.

It sounds like, in addition to being a guy who could created... "his legend on the football fields and basketball courts of Durham as a teenager, he was known as 'the Durham Bull.'", he also was active in his community despite the wealth he accumulated as a professional athlete.

His college coach Dave Odom had the following to say about his former players injury, "Say a prayer for Rodney and his family." That is always the reaction that people have to spinal cord injury. The injustice and irreversibility of paralysis always turns people to prayer. People feel powerless so they pray. But in actuality, they are not powerless. Hopefully Rodney's fans, the people in his community that he touched and anyone that hears about his horrific accident will supplement their prayers and advocate for a cure for spinal cord injury. Hopefully, they will contact their elected officials and demand that something be done to reverse this awful condition. Most people aren't aware how close we are to curative therapies and how drastically underfunded they are. Prayer is one things, action is another. Christopher Reeve demonstrated the power of celebrity in terms of raising awareness and money for a cure to spinal cord injury.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Rodney Rogers accident. I wish him the best in his recovery. It sounds like he is at the Shepard Center in Atlanta, the best SCI recovery center in the nation. Watch the following video... a man capable of such tremendous feats on the hardwood is now a quadriplegic. The cruelty and unfairness of spinal cord injury always finds new ways to surprise me.
